2004 Lammas Games

by Graham Butcher

It was a very hot afternoon in Oxfordshire. Plastic cheeses were rolled, wolves lolled in the heat and Druid priestesses got naked in the mud. Bet you wish you were there.

The 2004 Lammas Games was the brainchild of Emma Restall (Bobcat) of The Druid Network and Dave Mercer of The Children of Artemis. Much preparation went into the event and on the day 250 hundred people attended. During the daytime there were traditional sports to participate in, a large cage with four wolves to see through the bars, and for the brave, even enter and get better acquainted.

In the evening the Eisteddfod competition was a great success with 12 story tellers, poets and singers entering. The winner was Paul Newman from Sheffield with his powerful poem about the threat to the Nine Ladies stones. As the evening progressed there was much comradeship, story telling and singing around the campfire.

The event raised a total of £1,500, which was donated to Peace Direct, Compassion in World Farming and Trees for Life, the nominated charities. Donations were also made to Wolf Trust, who brought the wolves, and to the Animal Rescue Centre, who brought Ferrets along to the event.
